An extended COMMENTARY is available to download in pdf format.
Synopsis of philosophical content:
The Commentary sheet above shows in detail the strands of argument followed in the film.
The film introduces the (so-called) ‘two worlds’ aspect of the theory of forms, and the mathematical route to understanding the forms; it considers in what way democracy may be said to be irrational; it illustrates Plato’s conviction that justice is to do with order in the soul, as well as in the state.

THE SOPHISTS
The DVD contains these QUESTIONS FOR STUDENTS linking to specific clips (pdf)
Synopsis of philosophical content:
It is sometimes thought that Moral Relativism follows logically from a liberal outlook, and that, in turn, relativism entails an attitude of toleration between cultures. The Sophists shows how both assumptions are highly questionable, by considering how Modern Sophists (following in the tradition of The Sophist Thrasymachus in Plato's Republic), might operate, and how their actions can apparently be entirely justified by moral relativism.

THE KIRILOV SOLUTION
Synopsis of philosophical content
Ideas arising in the narrative include:
- The general thesis of determinism, and its possible fatalistic entailments.
- The concept of determinism that is generated by a certain conception of physical science.
- How central the assumption of free choice and responsibility is in our practical confrontations with real situations.
- Some of the implications of determinism for moral responsibility
- A sketch of an argument between those who think that there is a concept of free will that is compatible with determinism and those who think there is not.
- A sketch of one attempt to show that we nevertheless possess a radical form of free will. (The title refers very loosely to a character in Dostoyevsky's The Devils who anticipates the kind of radical concept of freedom developed by Sartre.)
